Severe flood warnings as evacuations continue in Essex and Suffolk

Thousands of people along the east coast of England are being evacuated from their homes ahead of a predicted tidal surge.

Eleven severe flood warnings are now in place, meaning there is a danger to life, across Suffolk and Essex.

Some 5,000 homes in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, are being evacuated. About 2,500 homes in Jaywick, Essex, are also being evacuated.

The Environment Agency has downgraded three severe flood warnings which were in place in Jaywick, West Mersea and the tidal River Stour in Mistley and Manningtree to flood warnings.

In East Anglia, gauges show a predicted storm surge of 20in (50cm) which is predicted to build through the day.
