Planning guidance for councils changes to reduce flooding risk to homes

Planning guidance for councils changes to reduce flooding risk to homes

The updated Planning Practice Guidance aims to help councils make sure developments meet strict criteria in locations at risk of flooding, before planning committees approve them. It includes better guidance on flood resilience and the use of sustainable drainage systems.

Councils will need to demonstrate that a development will be safe from flooding for its lifetime, will not increase flood risk elsewhere and, where possible, will reduce flood risk overall.

The risk of flooding in the UK is increasing as a result of climate change and rising sea levels. The South East of England is currently under a yellow thunderstorm warning, with many areas hit by flash flooding.

According to the Met Office, from the start of the observational record in 1862, six of the 10 wettest years across the UK have occurred since 1998.
